RICHLAND GRO-OP
Nourish people. Build connections. Improve communities.
The Richland Gro-Op (RGO) is a cooperative of urban and rural farmers in Richland County, Ohio, that grow and sell vegetables year-round to local restaurants, institutions, and consumers. By crop-planning and marketing produce collectively, RGO members aim to improve the economic viability of urban agriculture in Richland County and increase the supply of locally produced, high-quality vegetables. RGO grows over 10 different types of vegetables and delivers year-round throughout the Richland County and Central Ohio region.
Richland Gro-Op (RGO) exists to nourish people, build connections, and improve our local communities by growing opportunities for urban and small scale farmers in the greater Mansfield area.
At RGO, we believe that good food is grown close to home, and that everyone benefits with a stronger connection to their food. We believe growing food offers value with more than just nutrition. Expanding opportunities for people to become farmers positively impacts communities.
An important part of our farming model and message is based on the microfarm system. Microfarms are small-scale, high-yield, sustainably-minded farms, which are usually supported by urban or suburban environments. Excerpt from the article:
"Kent "Kip" Curtis had a dream of self-sustainable microfarms in Mansfield.
Organizations like the North End Community Improvement Cooperative and local residents like Walter Bonham, Justin Ocheltree, Vincent Owens and Matt and Amanda Stanfield are helping make that dream come true.
"It's really been more successful than I could have imagined in many ways," said Curtis, an associate professor of environmental history at The Ohio State University-Mansfield campus. "We have a really solid group of producers who have worked together for two years, six growing seasons"

Excerpt from the article:
"Walter Bonham, owner of The Food Lab, in Mansfield, was not always a farmer. There aren’t many farmers in Mansfield. It’s a city, and agriculture has not traditionally been one of the city’s industries.
But that could be changing. Bonham, along with nine other new farmers, spent 2019 learning how to manage microfarms, through training from Ohio State University. These farmers are getting ready to start their first full year of growing."

Excerpt from the article:
"Four farms were opened to the public in Mansfield on Friday evening in the middle of an area considered to be a food desert.
The farms are members of the Richland Gro-Op Cooperative, and will occupy eight high-tunnel greenhouses that were built with federal grant dollars at the former Gorman-Rupp site off Bowman Street near the intersection with West Sixth Street"
